Kamal Fayek Georgy

telling his story

My Name Is Kamal Fayek Georgy, I am married and I work as a blocks cutter, our monthly income is EGP 1000, I have 2 children.

The house consists of 2 floors, made of blocks, built with concrete roof, consists of 3 rooms, reception, kitchen and a restroom in each floor.

I used to live with my original family my father, mother my brothers and sisters in the ground floor, all my family used to live in one room and sharing the same kitchen and restroom.

My family and I used to face many issues due to the tightness of the house and due to using the same restroom in the ground floor which causes hygiene problems.

I have applied for a loan from Habitat before for renovating a concrete roof, but I did not have the financial capacity to renovate the second restroom and do basic finishing and renovations in the house.

This was a major issue as all the family used to sleep in one room without separation or lack of privacy for parents and children.

I have applied for a loan from Habitat housing program which helped us a lot in improving hour housing and health conditions.

We have installed sewage and water links, plumbing for the restroom, as well as doing carpentry work, and installing electricity, doors and windows in the house.

After Habitat’s intervention the family currently is living happily and safely and could separate from the original family, and living in a separate floor, with using a separate restroom, as well as separation between parents and children.

Thanks to Habitat our housing and health conditions have been improved, and the family can live safely.

Sharbat Adly Sadek

telling her story

My Name is Sharbat Adly Sadek, I am a housewife and I am 37 years old. I have a family that consists of my Husband who works as an Agricultural Engineer, my Daughter and my Son, both of my children are students.

Our monthly income is an average of EGP 1000

Our House’s area is around 60 m2 – consists of 2 rooms, restroom, reception and a kitchen. Without a roof, the floor is made of Cement; the area is very tight for our family to live in.

I live in Nazlet Faragalla which is a small village, and this is the village I Was born at and my ancestors lived there their whole lives.

I am a simple housewife and I care for my family’s health and safety that Is why we were very encouraged to apply for Habitat’s housing loan program which helps us to improve our housing and health conditions.
We have already taken a loan before from Habitat, and we were introduced to the organization through the people of the village.

From the main issues that the family used to suffer from was the tightness of the ground floor, as it used to cause us a lot of issues such as all the family members living in only 2 rooms, plus that we used to live in same floor with our livestock (birds). So we had to renovate the roof of the third floor in order to be able to expand the house.

We were hoping to build a concrete roof for the third floor, which expands the house for us and have more rooms to live in more safely.

The major modifications that the family has witnessed, that the house’s area became larger and expanded much more than before, after building the roof of the third floor.

Health program has given us the opportunity to do medical examinations and lab tests, which by we discovered that Sharbat and Amgad have a percentage of salts crystals. And that Irene is suffering from Anaemia.

Improving the housing conditions had made many positive effects on the family’s life. As Irene who is in the Secondary stage, is now having a private room of her own which enables her privacy and a good atmosphere to do her studies and assignments in a proper way.

Improving the house conditions also has a great positive effect on the family’s health, as after they had built the concrete roof for the third floor, and the house is expanded and became more hygienic and safe to live in.

as the livestock (birds) are currently staying in a separate floor, which definitely affects the family’s health positively, and protected them from being infected by bird flu.

Habitat has changed our lives positively from what it has been before, as currently we have a house that is enough for the family members, with separate rooms for the children and for us. We can have now privacy for all the family members, as well as the separation between livestock (birds) and our rooms, which is a major in affecting our health positively.

As well as the awareness sessions that we attended has had a great effect in changing some of our lives’ habits, and doing lab tests and medical examinations, have helped us to discover of what we had of diseases and how to cure them by taking the proper medications and suitable nutritional meals that are prescript by the doctor.

Now I can say that I see a brighter future after Habitat’s intervention, and we can raise our children in a safe and healthy atmosphere.

Taha Abd El Badaie Abd El Aziz

telling his story

My Name is Taha Abd El Badaie Abd El Aziz and I am 35 years old, my family consists of 4 members me, my wife and 2 Daughters. I work as a Tok Tok driver; my monthly income is EGP 150 which is definitely not enough for our family.

House consists of 2 floors, walls are made of mudbricks; the roof is made of thatch and covered with wax polish.

It also consists of 2 rooms, small reception and a curtain covered restroom.

My Village is Nazlet Hanna, and what I like the most about it is the cooperation and linking between the people of the village, and also the support the people give each other in their difficult circumstances.

I applied for receiving a loan/ support from Habitat’s Egypt housing project to improve my housing and living conditions and health state, and hoping to protect my family from the risk that we were exposed to, like the existence of harmful insects that may penetrate and enter our house. When it used to rain in winter, the rain used to fall upon us from the roof as it was made from thatch and wax polish, before the intervention the house was inhumane for us to live in as it was made of mudbricks so it was really easy for any environmental conditions to barge in to our house.

Before the intervention as well my wife, my daughters and I sometimes used to sleep in the Tok tok that I used to drive for my work in order to protect ourselves from the rain, insects. Etc. but after Habitat’s intervention the situation has totally changed, and we become to have a humane respectful house with a door to protect our safety, as well as having a room of our own me and my wife separated from our daughters to have our own privacy. As well as having a renovated humane restroom with a door to provide privacy.

House after Intervention:

House has been renovated with blocks, and a concrete roof, building a steely gate and a door for the house, 3 windows and 3 rooms’ doors have been renovated, and installing a new Sewage system connection and a new electricity connection.

The healthcare program that was offered by Habitat like the lab tests, medical examinations and covering medications, nutritional meals and awareness sessions,

And as for me after going through the lab tests, we discovered that I have a percentage of salt crystals, and I am persevering on the medication the Doctor has provided me with and I am improving as well.

As I have described earlier how my and my family’s life has been before the intervention, but after Habitat’s support our life is improved and our housing, living and health conditions are in a better state.

I also wish to witness my situation and my neighbors and all the people of the village as well to have well living conditions in a respectful secured hygienic home.
